Building a Monthly Income Portfolio
Monthly income is a calendar problem first. You either hold monthly payers or you stagger quarterlies. Frequency is not a risk rating.
What it is
A monthly income portfolio is a set of holdings whose distribution dates fill most months. Covered-call index ETFs, many REITs, and some preferreds already pay monthly.
You can also combine three quarterly aristocrats with different pay months. That is more work and still not “safer.”
Hypothetical: $120,000 aimed at $800/month
Labeled hypothetical — not a live yield, AUM, or tax bracket.
- Spending target: $800/month = $9,600/year.
- At a constant 8% distribution rate you would need $120,000. That 8% is a filter, not a forecast — see the monthly 8%+ list.
- If half the payout is return of capital or the NAV falls 8%, your “paycheck” ate the principal. Run the NAV erosion calculator on each options fund before you size it.

Who this is not for
- Treating weekly 0DTE products as the default monthly engine.
- Replacing an emergency fund with distribution yield.
What people get wrong
- Stacking every monthly 8%+ name and ignoring overlap.
- Using payment frequency as proof the dividend is covered.

FAQ
How do I get paid dividends every month?
Hold funds and stocks that already distribute monthly (JEPI, JEPQ, Realty Income, and peers) or stagger quarterly payers. Frequency does not make the payout safer.
Is a monthly 8%+ ETF portfolio a retirement plan?
No. It is a cash-flow construction. Model the income, then check total return and NAV erosion on each name.
Which Dividend Wealth list is the monthly 8%+ document?
/lists/high-yield-monthly-etfs — curated monthly income ETFs, not the raw 8%+ universe.
Educational only — not investment, tax, or legal advice. Dividend Wealth does not recommend 2x daily, inverse, or single-stock YieldMax products as “best income.” Yields change. Confirm filings and your own tax situation.
