Adding Your First Portfolio
Walk through the Create Portfolio Wizard — name your account, set goals, add holdings, and land on a live dashboard.
Where to start
From Home or Portfolios, click Create Portfolio or Create New Portfolio. This opens the wizard at /create-new-portfolio. Your progress is saved as a draft in your browser if you leave mid-way.
The Four Steps
Name your portfolio
Enter a portfolio name (required) — e.g., "Roth IRA", "Taxable Brokerage", or "Retirement Income". Add optional notes. Default currency is USD. Click Save & Continue, or Skip to move on without saving yet.
Set your dividend goals (optional)
Define an annual dividend income goal, portfolio size target, and time horizon. Choose your primary goal (live off dividends, boost returns, or preserve capital), style preference (income, dividend growth, ETF only, or total return), and risk comfort (low, moderate, high). All of this is optional — click Skip if you want to add holdings first.
Add your holdings
Choose how to populate the portfolio: enter transactions (recommended for accurate cost basis), enter current holdings only, or link your brokerage via Plaid (paid plans). You can paste from a spreadsheet, upload a CSV, or type rows manually.
Review and finalize
Confirm your portfolio name, goals, and holdings. Click Finish to submit transactions, trigger portfolio calculations, and redirect to your new portfolio dashboard.
Portfolio Limits by Plan
How many portfolios you can create depends on your membership tier:
- Free / trial: 1 portfolio. If you hit the limit, the wizard shows a lock message with an Upgrade link.
- Standard: Up to 6 portfolios (1 brokerage-linked + 5 manual).
- Premium / Lifetime: Unlimited portfolios.
On the Free tier after your trial lapses, you can still view one portfolio but any additional portfolios you created during trial are locked until you upgrade. See Pricing for current plan details.
What Happens After Creation
Redirect to your portfolio
When you click Finish, the system submits your transactions, rebuilds your positions (applying stock splits automatically), and redirects you to /portfolios/[id].
Dashboard tabs light up
Your portfolio page includes Overview, Holdings, Diversification, Income, Calendar, Goals & What-If, Performance, and Alerts tabs. Forward income, yield on cost, and dividend projections populate once holdings are in.
Add more later
Use Add Transaction on the portfolio page to enter additional buys and sells anytime. You can also import holdings in bulk — see the Importing Holdings guide.
